A 59-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street in Kahului Wednesday night.
According to police, the accident happened just before 6:30 p.m. on Kaahumanu Avenue.
Investigators say the man was trying to cross the street, outside of a marked crosswalk, and was struck by a vehicle.
He was then taken to Maui Memorial Medical in critical condition where he later died.
Police have not released the identity of the man.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
This is Maui County’s 22th traffic fatality for the year 2012 as compared with 19 the same time last year.
