Traffic was backed up for miles in the Ewa-bound lanes of Nimitz Highway as Honolulu Police investigated the scene of the fatal accident.
The driver of the Jeep managed to survive the crash.
"What the driver of the Jeep told us he was on Kamehameha Highway headed towards Hickam when the Cavelier came down from Valkenberg headed makai-bound and they met at the intersection. The Cavelier then spun out ejecting driver onto the roadway," HPD Lt. Bobby Towne said.
The 20-year-old male driver was initially described as being in extremely critical condition. He was transported to Tripler Army Medical Center where he later died. The Jeep driver was uninjured.
All Ewa-bound traffic on Nimitz Highway was diverted onto Elliot Street on the back side of the airport and then on west.
The investigators were thorough, staying at the scene for three-and-a-half hours after the crash happened.
"Normally, we take an aerial with our helicopter, which will help open the roads up quicker. But unfortunately we’re under the overpass so we’re not going to be able to do an aerial today," Lt. Towne said.
The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the victim as Mark Spofford of Mililani.
This is Oahu’s 15th traffic fatality for 2013 compared to 16 at this time last year.
