Moanalua High School wins HSBA’s Young Lawyers Division mock trial

Moanalua High School has done it again! Three years in a row, Moanalua High School has earned the top spot at the HSBA’s Young Lawyers Division statewide high school mock trial competition. With a larger group of students involved this year, Moanalua had two teams entered to compete, both of which placed. Moanalua Team B moves on to represent the State in the national mock trial competition which is to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico next month.

This year’s competition included 15 public and private schools from Oahu, 4 from the Big Island, 4 from Kauai and 1 from Maui. "The program was a huge success in large part due to all the volunteer coaches and students’ dedication and hard work," said Miriah Holden, State Coordinator of the Mock Trial Competition and a director of the HSBA Young Lawyers Division. "Mock Trial has been a great way for students to get involved in extracurricular activities, as well as learn about our judicial system."

Hawaii State Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald, Associate Justice Sabrina S. McKenna, Chief Judge Craig H. Nakamura, and Intermediate Court of Appeals Judge Katherine Leonard presided over the final competitions.

Commenting on her team’s achievement, Natasha White, a junior and team captain, said, "I am so proud of the Moanalua teams, who placed first and third at the state finals. It was a lot of work over many months, and a very rewarding learning experience. We are very grateful to the HSBA’s Young Lawyers Division for hosting this fantastic competition every year, and we also thank our advisor, Fred Ito, and our attorney coaches, David Suzuki and Brian Kang."

The State Mock Trial Competition is sponsored by the HSBA YLD, the public service and pro bono community service arm of the HSBA. The goal of the program is to promote civics education among high school students
