A 26-year-old woman was also killed Saturday on Oahu’s roads.
She was riding her motorcycle on a notorious stretch of roadway when she crashed into a jeep.
Honolulu police say she was speeding.
It happened on the eve of a statewide effort to promote motorcycle safety.
The "S" turn along Kaukonahua Road on Oahu’s North shore is a deadly and dangerous stretch of roadway.
On Saturday, Honolulu Police say a 26-year-old woman riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle through that area heading Waialua bound when she crossed the center line. Traffic investigators say she was speeding and ran head-on into an oncoming Jeep. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
"It rippled through the whole motorcycle community because we don’t like to hear about anyone getting hurt," said Khepera Ridley of Cycle City.
Ridley says the tragedy comes just as the state sponsors a month long motorcycle safety campaign.
"As you can see safety is our number one priority here for us at Cycle City," Ridley said.
He says safety gear should not be a choice but a necessity.
"For something as simple as a little slip and fall, with the right safety gear you can get up and keep riding, without the right safety gear you can end up in the ICU," he said.
So far this year eight motorcyclists have been killed in Hawaii, there were a total of 18 fatalities last year, and 30 in 2009.
"We’d like to think the numbers are going in the right direction but once again it’s cliché, 8 fatalities this year now with this latest death is 8 too many," said Dan Meisenzahl of the Department of Transportation.
The State Department of Transportation says safety is everyone’s responsibility. This month they begin airing a new Public Service Announcement.
The message is to Look Twice, Save a life.
"You could be the best motorcyclist in the entire state in the world, it doesn’t matter if one driver is not paying attention."
