According to U.S. Navy officials, a possible unexploded ordnance was found underwater Friday afternoon about 50 yard off of Flat Island in Kailua Bay.

Officials say the possible ordnance was discovered by a private citizen, who initially reported the finding to the U.S. Coast Guard.

As a precaution, the Coast Guard issued a safety broadcast notice to mariners advising mariners to remain 100 yards clear of the area.

Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams are returning to the site on Saturday to attempt to locate the item, make an assessment, and determine the next course of action.

Officials say the device appears to have been underwater for at least 20 years and does not appear to an immediate hazard to the public.
