New door-to-door scheme involves phony HECO workers

Be on the lookout! Imposters posing as workers contracted out by Hawaiian Electric Company are going door-to-door asking for money.

According to HECO, the imposters say they’re there to change the batteries in your meter. They then ask you to pay a fee or your electricity will be turned off.

HECO is urging the public not to give in, even if the imposters hassle you.

"Make sure that you ask for proper ID. And if you still have any questions, you can go ahead and call us. Call our customer service department, 548-7311, and you can ask to confirm that someone has been sent over to talk to you," HECO spokesperson Darren Pai said.

Officials say there are workers contracted by the Board of Water Supply that are going door-to-door to change the batteries on your water meter. However, the BWS says they never ask you to pay a fee or ask to go inside of your home.
