Students and Hawaii Kai community organizations gathered at Kaiser High School to make a first of its kind garden on the campus.
It’s called a "rain garden" and its unique design helps prevent flooding and erosion while nourishing native plants.
It was all part of Malama Maunalua, an on-going effort to help clean up Maunalua Bay.
For years, run-off from the school has drained into the bay. The rain garden helps to reduce that.
"That rain will percolate into the soil it will be held here and percolate into the soil so it will actually be held here and nourish the soil instead of carrying mud with it into the bay," said Jennifer Taylor of Malama Maunalua.
Organizers hope this project will be one of many to help clean and protect Maunalua Bay.
