New opportunities in Ewa

The developer says it’s about choices, and allowing Ewa residents to stay in their neighborhood to buy essentials.

You have to use your imagination, but within a year a new shopping center will change the landscape of Ewa.

"So this just fills a hole in terms of being able to provide the service so that people don’t need to drive. Because this is a decent size community today, and there is still growth that is occurring,” said Deborah Karbo of Property Development Centers.

It will be called Laulani Village, just off Fort Weaver Road.

"Well this allows us to stay in our community. And it allows us to save time and spend more with families. And it just gives us that dream to live, work, and play here,” said Rep. Kymberly Pine.

The complex promises to be large, sitting on 20 acres of land.

"It will be about a couple of hundred thousand square foot shopping center. At this point and time we can announce Safeway as an anchor tenant, and about 70 additional tenants,” said Karbo.

Work is already underway, and what it ultimately means more jobs for area residents.

"People didn’t say that this is going to provide hundreds of jobs for Ewa Beach residents. And I think that’s going to be a real strong benefit to our community,” said Rep. Pine.

Safeway is the main anchor, which will mean a second grocery store for the area.

But there will be other stores and service providers as well.

"We can’t announce tenants just yet, but we have a significant amount of tenants that we’re working with, and we’re very close to being able to announce and we’ll do that as soon as they’re signed,” said Karbo.

Representative Pine says the new development will have a significant impact on the older population in Ewa, who will be able to still use their cars without having to drive more than a few miles.
