Norm Chow coaching staff taking shape

The coaching staff under new UH football head man Norm Chow is taking shape.

Chow, who was set to return to the islands Tuesday for the first time since his introduction as warrior coach last month, announced the hiring four more assistants and a couple of them will be familiar names to Hawaii football fans.

Tommy Lee, a Saint Louis school graduate has spent the better part of 40-years in coaching.

He’s the older brother of former UH staff members Ron and Cal Lee.

Cal was not retained by Chow.

Tommy Lee has stops as quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator at Utah, Montana, Portland State and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts on his resume as well as head coaching experience at Willamette and Montana-Western.

Keith Uperesa will also join the coaching crew in Manoa.

He, like Chow, is a Punahou School alum and was an all-WAC offensive tackle at BYU and played 3-seasons in the NFL.

Uperesa has been an o-line coach at UNLV, Utah, USC and most recently Nicholls State.

He’s also been an offensive coordinator at Idaho State.

So to this point, here are the offensive assistants brought in by Chow.

Chris Wiesehan was also a hire announced Tuesday.

He was a receivers coach the last 2-seasons for the Winnipeg blue bombers of the Canadian Football League.

On "D"…Daronte Jones was also among Tuesday’s announced hirings.

He just completed his first season as defensive backs coach for the CFL’s Montréal Alouettes.

He joins previously added defensive assistants, Lewis Powell and Tony Tuioti.

There are still a couple of slots open on Chow’s coaching staff.

He’s expected to fill those within the week, and that includes his choice for defensive coordinator.
