Oahu’s biggest solar project launches

Oahu’s newest and biggest solar project went online Monday morning.

Generating about 1.23 megawatts of clean energy, the Pearl City Peninsula solar energy facility was turned on Monday morning.

The 4,300 solar panels were installed by a public-private partnership on military land and will power about 250 military family homes every year.

"If we really think about commitment the military place in the resource of energy they have more skin in the game more than anybody," says Pono Shim of Enterprise of Honolulu

Not only will the project produce clean energy for military homes, but the project will reduce the armed services carbon footprint here on Oahu.

This solar project is one of four solar farms that Forest City operates on Oahu, providing more than 3.5 megawatts of clean energy annually, which means more to the military than power bills.

"So what this project means is some ways is peace..that i don’t think the military is all about going to war..I think it is about piece because they have more skin in the game if we can depend on our own resources rather than other resources then maybe it can help," Shim says.

Two additional solar projects are under construction now in West Oahu and are expected to to be finished before the end of the year.
