Obama pledges support to Japan

President Obama meet with Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit gets underway in Hawaii.

The president called Japan a strong ally for America’s security and a valued partner.

He also stressed the importance of a strong economic relationship with the country, and pledged continued support for the Japanese people following the earthquake and tsunami back in March.

Mr. Obama is also scheduled to meet with the president’s of Russia and China.       

Speaking of Noda, Obama said he was “extremely impressed already by the boldness of his vision.” He confirmed the importance of the U.S.-Japanese alliance and said he was confident they can build on the relationship.

Noda spoke second and said that he had Saturday morning visited the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and laid a wreath. Noda spoke of the beauty of Hawaii.

“I’m very much encouraged by the fact that America is increasing its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. And I do believe that Japan and the United States must work closely together to establish economic rules,” said Noda through a translator.
