They’ve been camping out on city sidewalks and now they are taking their tents to City Hall.
Occupy Honolulu is holding a 24-hour sleepover to protest several bills being considered on Wednesday.
Their message: to tell the city to stop criminalizing houselessness.
In response, Mayor Kirk Caldwell has marked off an area in front of Honolulu Hale as a free speech zone.
"We want to do it in an area that is safe and won’t obstruct people traveling on the sidewalks around City Hall and they are able to get their message across," Mayor Caldwell said.
Security patrols City Hall on a regular basis. The mayor has not called for additional police presence.
The protest will run through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
