Okumura named Honolulu’s Paramedic of the Year

Honolulu’s Paramedic of the Year was honored at city hall Thursday afternoon.

The award went to safety specialist Lorrin Okumura who developed an infectious disease exposure plan for the city.

The city’s Lifesaver Award was given to Iolani School’s director of health services who saved the life of a co-worker after he went into cardiac arrest.

Shannon Yonamine used an automated external defibrillator to help save the man’s life.

"My dad died 5 years ago of sudden cardiac arrest in his office and nobody knew CPR training nobody had an AED at that time so it comes kind of full circle now that I’m able to tell his children, ‘You’re welcome’."

Yonamine’s co-worker was awake when paramedics arrived and has made a full recovery.
