WAILUKU, Maui, Hawaii – The County of Maui is pleased to announce the permanent opening of the Paia bypass on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Mayor Alan Arakawa and Maui County Council members will be on hand along with officials from Alexander & Baldwin to help throw the gates open for good.
"The people of Paia, Haiku and other East Maui communities have suffered enough," said Mayor Arakawa. "Traffic heading into Paia Town is backed up past Spreckelsville on a daily basis. Sometimes as far back as the Kaunoa Senior Center. I want people to know that we have heard their cries for help and we are confident that keeping this road open will alleviate traffic congestion."
The County entered into an agreement with A&B to take over the road and assume responsibility earlier this month. A&B had opened up the road to the community years ago but only during peak traffic hours from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Monday to Sunday.
"The community has been very patient, and I appreciate the Administration and the County Council working together with A&B to make this happen," said Paia-Makawao-Haiku Council member Mike White, who participated in the discussions that led to the bypass road’s full-time opening. "Traffic through Paia Town is an ongoing issue, and this bypass road is an important step in resolving the traffic congestion."
