KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Police say a Kansas City Chiefs player shot his girlfriend Saturday morning, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and turned the gun on himself. Officers arriving at the stadium parking lot reported seeing a man in a car holding a handgun to his head as he spoke to his coach and general manager. That’s when police heard a gunshot. The player identified as Jovan Belcher, 25, played as a linebacker for the Chiefs. His girlfriend has been identified as 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins. Authorities did not release a possible motive for the murder-suicide, though police said that Belcher and his girlfriend had been arguing recently. The two have a 3-month-old child together.
Officials say says Belcher’s mother recently had moved in with the couple, possibly to help with the baby. She called police just before 8 a.m. to report Perkins had been shot multiple times.
Perkins was transported to a hospital, where she died a short time later.
The team said it would play its home game against the Carolina Panthers as scheduled on Sunday.
