Police warn public about investment scams

Honolulu police have a warning to residents after a man lost $100,000 in a scam.

He’s not the only one to fall victim.

HPD says it’s an investment scheme that’s targeting people to invest in a construction project in Malaysia.

Scammers are pretending to be from a bank in Canada and ask victims to deposit a check, then wire the money.

But local residents  end up losing out.

"Uh it’s a nightmare, it’s unbelievable, because the bank closes your accounts immediately," said a scam victim.

"What we want the public to be aware of this because the intermediary or the bank takes tremendous losses in this particular case we are talking over $100,000 lost in less than a month," said Lt. John McCarthy, Honolulu Police Department.

Police advise to be careful who you deal with during financial transactions and to heed the old adage: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
