Crews were called to a home on Mokuhau road just before 1:00 p.m Wednesday after a possible homemade explosive device was found inside.
Displaced residents are staying at the Wailuku gym. The American Red Cross is manning the gym.
"If any residents need transportation from that area to the evacuation center that has been set-up what they can do is go to mokuhau park and transportation is made available" says Maui Police Lt. Wayne Ibarra.
The Army explosives ordnance disposal team in Honolulu was contacted.
Police do not know how long residents will be displaced while they investigate.
