Power outage at Kahului Airport caused by chicken

Maui Electric Company says a chicken is responsible for Tuesday’s power outage at Kahului Airport.

According to MECO, the chicken got into a transformer located in the car rental area.

The transformer is surrounded by a chain link fence. Officials say the chicken must have entered through the top, which is open, and caused a short circuit.

Wild chickens have been known to frequent the area.

The outage occurred just after 2 p.m. and power was restored about a half hour later.

Affected businesses included rental car companies, the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, and Kmart.
