Rainbow Falls has no waterfall

The Rainbow Falls waterfall on Hawaii Island is one of the most majestic sights to see. At least it is — usually.

It hasn’t been raining much in the Hilo area lately.

So right now — there’s no waterfall.

"For this particular instance it’s been dry for a week or two at least," said Ian Morrison, National Weather Service. "We do have a gage above the rainbow falls area and it is still showing some stream flow at about 30% of normal so the water is still flowing in the stream it’s just not making it to the falls."

Morrison says the Windward side of Hawaii Island where Rainbow Falls is located is abnormally dry — also known as d-zero on the drought scale.

He says the Hilo area, which is normally wet, has been dry lately because of the lack of trade winds, which bring the moisture.
