Rare tornado causes damage in Kailua

The storm produced a water spout that turned into a tornado when it came ashore in Lanikai.

It damaged several homes.

The damage ranges from downed trees to blown roofs, to even holes in the sides of homes.

A Lanikai resident shot this video just after 7 o’clock this morning.

A waterspout just offshore.

Little did this person know how much damage it was about to cause.

"So this whole thing lifted here."

Darren de Mello does maintenance work for this home on Mokulua Drive.

"It lifted from the middle of this right here. That’s where the hole is in the middle and threw it over there."

That’s right — part of the roof ended up in the tree.

And here’s what it looks like inside the home.

"I thought oh my God."

Mother Nature punched a hole in one of the bedrooms.

"You’re talking 4×12 beams just snapped in half."

Luckily no one was injured.

The tornado also wreaked havoc a few doors down — demolishing a shed on Robin Lloyd’s property.

It also tore off part of her front gate, and uprooted a traffic sign.

The tornado then made its way across the street, uprooting a tree there before causing trouble on Kuailima and Onekea Drive.

Someone posted this video to YouTube showing some of the damage on Onekea.

"Whoa look at this guy’s one man, it got speared, it got speared on the thing."

The National Weather Service classifies the tornado as an EF0 — with wind speeds of 60-70 miles per hour, and about 20 yards wide.

"That thing used to be a carport, looks like it used to be over there."

The tornado made its way up the mountain, taking off part of this home’s roof on Koohoo Place.

Here’s a closer look at the tornado’s one and a half mile path.

After carving its way through Lanikai, it went over the mountain and ended up in Enchanted Lake.

"I just heard that whoop, that big whoosh and it was gone in a matter of seconds," said Enchanted Lake resident Harold Sylvester.

The tornado shook homes on Akumu Street and rattled nerves.

Despite the damage, at least no one was injured or killed.

The tornado lasted about 10-15 minutes.

And forecasters say the conditions over Hawaii at the time were similar to what you’d find in Tornado Alley on the mainland.
