Red Cross takes hats off for annual fund drive

A lot of first responders took their hats off to help raise money for a worthy cause.

March is national Red Cross month, and Saturday volunteers fanned out across the state collecting donations for the Hawaii chapter.

Red Cross teams are deployed on average, every four days, to an incident somewhere around the state.

The Red Cross says they always need donations since they don’t get any funding from the state or federal government.

"So we’re asking the public to give generously anything that they can to help the Red Cross provide our services to the community," said Red Cross Hawaii chapter CEO Coralie Chun Matayoshi. "It has to be from the people of Hawaii and we really need a strong Red Cross."

The Red Cross says locally about $3 million is needed every year to provide critical services to those affected by a disaster.
