Research vessel docks in Hawaii after month-long expedition from San Diego

A journey to track plastic and other trash in the Pacific Ocean yielded plenty of rubbish.

The Robert C. Seamans vessel just finished a 39-day voyage from San Diego to Hawaii on the lookout for plastic.

"There was a refrigerator that came by at one point that we opened up a drawer and found various items such as this, food items," chief scientist Emelia Deforce said.

"There is an incredible amount of plastic in the Pacific Ocean. And I think we’re just starting to realize what the scope of that plastic is," Hawaii Pacific University graduate student Zora MccGinnis said.

MccGinnis says she made a similar voyage a few years ago from San Francisco to Hawaii, and believes she saw much more plastic on this trip.
