Rob DeMello promoted to KHON2 Sports Director

August 20, 2012 – (Honolulu, Hawaii) – KHON2 weekend sports anchor/reporter Rob DeMello will be promoted to KHON2 Sports Director effective Monday. In addition, former University of Hawaii baseball player Sam Spangler will join the team as sports producer and reporter.

Kanoa Leahey, has been KHON2′s sports anchor since 2004 and will remain on the KHON2 staff as a part-time sports anchor on Monday and Tuesday evenings. "Rob is as knowledgeable and enthusiastic a sports journalist as there is in our business. I know that KHON2 Sports is in good hands with him at the helm. His elevation to the sports director position was inevitable," says Leahey.

Leahey continues to follow in his father’s footsteps by providing local play-by-play coverage on Oceanic sports and nationally on ESPN . Two years ago, Leahey was hired by the sports network to provide select game coverage for the Diamond Head Classic and this move will allow him the opportunity to be more available to the ESPN Sports Network, while continuing to work for OC Sports and KHON2.

DeMello has been with KHON2 for nearly three years serving as weekend sports anchor and has taken great pride in local sports coverage. "I am both extremely excited for Kanoa, and incredibly honored to be given this opportunity. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the position and for those who have held it before me. I couldn’t have asked for a better team to work with than Kanoa and Sam," said DeMello.

The newest addition to the KHON2 sports team is Albuquerque, New Mexico native Sam Spangler, who pitched for the Rainbow baseball team from 2007 to 2010. After playing professionally for two years, he decided to move to Hawaii and intern with Kanoa and Rob where he found a new passion.

Spangler said, "I am so excited to be joining the KHON2 Sports team. I am eager to work alongside and learn from Rob and Kanoa. My time with the Rainbows made me fall in love with the local sports community. I am looking forward to being a part of it again in a different capacity."
