Runners prepare for the 40th Annual Honolulu Marathon

It’s something many runners have probably spent months training for — the marathon.

A lot of them likely have dreams of a record run, that may not be in the cards this year.

"If the weather is bad you might want to shift your goals a little bit, and lower your race goal. Pacing yourself a lot slower than you normally would," said Jonathan Lyau, Honolulu Marathon Hall of Fame.

It’s for your own safety, which is something marathon officials make a top priority.

"On the course this year there is going to be water, sports drink, and for the first time they’re going to have power gels, which is energy gels at three different spots at the aid stations. So I think they are prepared for the runners this year," Lyau said.

High heat, humidity, and vog could make this race tougher than usual.

Six-time marathon champion Jimmy Muindi has great advice for anyone participating.

"One thing you need to take plenty of water before. And also secondly, on the way you need take like not one cup, not two cups, like three cups on the way," Muindi said.

And if the weather does make for slower times, one competitor says don’t be disappointed.

"Those kinds of things happen, and you just can’t let it worry you. Each race is an individual thing and it happens differently each time," marathon runner Milton Davis said.

All the athletes say the best thing to do is take water early and often during the race.
