GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — Mitt Romney’s path to the Republican nomination is even clearer now after Rick Santorum announced today in Pennsylvania that he is quitting the presidential campaign.
Santorum had sought to unite conservatives behind his presidential bid, but he was hampered by a lack of money and organization.
He said today that even though he didn’t accumulate the delegates he needed, he was "touching hearts" with his conservative message.
Meantime Romney is congratulating Santorum on his presidential campaign calling Santorum "an able and worthy competitor."
In a statement, Romney said Santorum has "proven himself to be an important voice" in the Republican Party and in the nation.
Santorum, during his announcement in Pennsylvania today, made no mention or endorsement of Romney. He has described the former Massachusetts governor as an unworthy standard-bearer for the GOP.
But Santorum said he will "continue to go out and fight and defeat President Barack Obama."
