A search is underway for a missing female hiker swept away in waters off Kauai.
Kauai County officials say lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard, and a helicopter are assisting in the search off Hanakapiai Beach.
The woman was one of over 20 hikers who became stranded about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
The group was waiting for rescuers who were en route to the scene after being notified, but some hikers attempted to cross Hanakapiai Stream before help arrived.
Fire officials reported a rise in the stream’s water level due to rainy conditions throughout the day.
