Shirokiya celebrated the company’s 350th anniversary Friday.
The department store’s history dates back to 1662, with the opening of a clothing store in Tokyo.
The business expanded over the years, and in 1959 Shirokiya opened its first store outside of Japan, at Ala Moana Center.
The store moved to its current location, across from Macy’s, in 1966.
In 2001, the weak economy forced the closure of Shirokiya stores at Pearlridge and on Maui.
The Ala Moana Center store is now locally owned.
