Shooting survivor says bullets grazed his baseball cap

The 21-year-old Aiea man who was shot at three times feels lucky to have survived without getting hurt or killed.

He was the first person whom police say Toby Stangel fired at in his shooting rampage.

He spoke with us on condition that we don’t use his name.

He said he was heading home from a friend’s house around 12:45 a.m. Friday morning.

He was on Kapiolani Boulevard, waiting at the stop light, getting ready to make a left turn onto Kapahulu Avenue to get to the freeway.

That’s when he noticed a man in a BWM pull up right behind his Toyota 4Runner SUV.

"He stepped out of his car and he approached my car. I looked at him, a tall Caucasian guy, and I noticed in his left hand he had a silver pistol," said the 21-year-old Aiea man.

A second later, he says a bullet hit his left rear door.

"And that’s when I put my head down. And that’s when he took another two shots again. The gun shots were to the point where it was pa, pa pa. And even though I was wearing a hat, I could feel it, feel the bullets going right over my head. I could feel the shards of glass going on top of my cap," said the 21-year-old Aiea man.

Uninjured and freaked out, he sped off onto the freeway looking for help.

When he returned to the scene, he found out a van had also been shot at.

"I didn’t see that car. I was already gone by the time she got to that intersection," said the 21-year-old Aiea man.

The 54-year old woman driving the van died at the hospital.

She’s identified as Tammy Nguyen of Palolo Valley.

Her 16-year-old daughter, who was also in the van, escaped uninjured.

"I’m still shaken up," said the 21-year-old Aiea man.

And he still can’t believe he survived the shooting.

"Super lucky. I know there’s someone watching over me. I know it’s my grandparents and my great grandma. I know there’s three of them and can you imagine three shots, each one of them was watching me every shot of the way," said the 21-year-old Aiea man.

He also said he’s glad and relieved the suspect Toby Stangel was caught.
