It’s good news for the hospital and for the community.
"One is the financial stability and viability as far as how financially stable we are, whether we re-invest in our facilities and equipment and so forth," said Jerry Stockstill, Castle Quality Director.
The criteria also include the hospital’s charge structure and cost structure. For example, Castle has lower medicaid and medicare charge structures. How important is an award like this?
"It helps us to confirm that we’re moving in the right direction and that we’re making the appropriate strategic decisions in order to serve our community and the health care needs that our community has," said Stockstill.
The committee making the decision on the award used something called the community value index.
"And because of that measurement, we – being measured in that, we’re in the top quintile which means we got the five star award," added Stockstill. "We’re one of only two hospitals in the state of Hawaii that actually were in the top quintile the top 20 percent of hospitals for the value that they add to the community in those four rounds."
By the way, the only other hospital in the state to win the five star award was Hilo Medical Center on the big island. Congratulations to Castle and Hilo for their five star awards and keep up the good work!
