Starting Monday, Dec. 2 if you’re driving along Kalanianaole Highway and notice some smoke coming out of the ground don’t worry. It’s all part of a test.
The city will be pumping smoke into sewer pipes along Kalanianaole Highway to see if the smoke escapes.
The area being smoke tested is between Puu Ikena drive and the canal to the west of East Hind drive in East Honolulu.
It’s a way to find leaks and prevent rainwater from getting into the sewer system.
Runoff from heavy rain can overwhelm the sewer system and treatment plants, causing sewer overflows.
The city says the smoke that’s being used is non-toxic and doesn’t have much of an odor.
They’ve already notified the people who live and work in the area.
