Source: Zimmerman to be charged

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — A special prosecutor in Florida confirms there will be an announcement later today (at 6 p.m., Eastern time) in the Trayvon Martin case — but she isn’t confirming that charges will be filed in connection with the death of the 17-year-old.

But a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation says George Zimmerman will, in fact, be charged.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, has admitted shooting the unarmed black teen, but has said he was acting in self-defense.

The lack of an arrest has led to protests across the nation.

Today, Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department is conducting a thorough and independent review of the case after launching its own investigation three weeks ago.

Two lawyers who had been representing Zimmerman announced yesterday that they were no longer handling his case because they hadn’t heard from him since Sunday. They have said he’s in hiding and suffering from high levels of stress.

But according to the law enforcement source with knowledge of the case, police know where Zimmerman is.
