State considering improvements to Kahului Airport

The state is considering three options for potential improvements and upgrades at Kahului Airport on Maui.

According to the State, runway 220 is deteriorating and in need of repair.

Two involve closing the airport to overseas aircraft for several weeks.

The third could be as much as a $100 million more expensive than the cheapest option, but would not require the shut-down of overseas travel.

The two more expensive options would also require a new consolidated car rental facility.

The options were presented to Maui residents Monday.
