Project leaders and political figures will unveil the innovative bike-sharing program to the Kailua community. Attendees will learn how the system works and experience riding the bikes around Kailua town. The bike-sharing program is part of a $100,000 pilot project of the Healthy Hawaii Initiative and Wisconsin-based B-Cycle, LLC. Kaneohe Ranch partnered with the state government to provide, at no charge, land for bike stations in two prime locations. Nguyen Le, B-Cycle sub-contractor and founder of Hawaii B-cycle, is operating and maintaining the program. Mobi PCS is providing the mobile broadband technology to keep the stations connected to remote operating systems.
The B-cycle program uses a high-tech payment, locking and tracking system. The cruiser-style bikes are intended for short rides so they can be “shared” with other users. Riders can subscribe online for “B-cards” that allow temporary use of the bikes around Kailua.
