The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation says the steel arrived at Kalaeloa Harbor on Saturday and was unloaded and inspected on Monday.
The steel was manufactured in Colorado using sustainable practices. Officials say it was produced in the U.S. to comply with the federal "Buy America" mandate requiring all rail project materials be made in the U.S. Since the project receives federal funding.
A total of about 13,000 tons of rail and other track related materials will be needed to complete the project, at a cost of $77.4 million.
A second shipment of 3,000 tons of steel is expected to arrive on Oahu next month.
We’ll have more on the shipment — and what happens to the materials now that construction is on hold — tonight on KHON2 News at 6 p.m.
