Suspect in fatal Waianae shooting appears in court

A young woman carrying the child of a Waianae man shot and killed last week, says her child’s future has been stolen.

The man suspected of pulling the trigger, Chad Duran made his first court appearance on Monday.

When the 23-year-old Duran made his first appearance in shackles his family had to fight back tears.

He’s accused of shooting and killing 26-year-old Christopher Medeiros, whose girlfriend is left wondering why.

"There is no reason why anybody’s life should be taken, none whatsoever. He took away Chris’ future, our future together, and my child’s future with his father," said Medeiros’ girlfriend Chanda Avilla.

Both the victim and the suspect have criminal pasts. Medeiro’s had convictions for assault and theft. Duran was convicted of drug charges.

The deadly shooting happened last Wednesday night in Waianae.
According to court documents when police officers went to the scene Chad Duran admitted to shooting someone on Lahaina Street. That’s where Medeiros lived, where Chanda Avilla remembers making memories with Christopher.

"Just all the time we spent together. Sorry," Avilla says. "He was very loyal, loving. If he loved you, he loved you unconditionally. He was always there for people that wasin need because he knew what it felt like."

Duran is charged with murder and firearm violations. He is being held on $750,000 bail.
