Teachers union discusses federal mediation

The union representing Hawaii’s public school teachers is discussing a proposal from Governor Abercrombie to resume contract talks with the help of a federal mediator.

HSTA board members began meeting Monday afternoon.

Public school teachers have been working under a contract imposed by the state in June of last year.

In a letter to union president Wil Okabe, the governor says the HSTA raised the possibility of mediation in the past, and says now is the time to engage in such an effort.
