Trial underway for second officer accused of overtime abuse

Trial is underway for a second HPD officer implicated in an overtime abuse investigation.

Officer Michael Krekel is accused of tampering with government records.

Prosecutors say he falsely claimed that sergeants were at a drunk driving checkpoint, when they were not.

Krekel’s defense attorney says he did not know the sergeants were not there, and relied on his supervisors to provide that information.

The two sergeants are also facing charges, along with two other officers.

Last week, a jury found officer Leighton Kato not guilty of similar charges.
