Two teens and one Kauai man rescued from dangerous outside reef waters

Two Lihue teens and a Hanamaulu man were rescued in waters off Anini Beach, on Kauai, at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Rescuers report that the 14-year-old females were stand-up paddling and got caught in the current, unable to paddle back to shore. Their uncle paddled out on a body board to try and help the girls but also got caught in the strong current.

Firefighters were on scene within ten minutes and located the three individuals on the far side of the channel. Two firefighters on rescue paddle boards and two lifeguards on jetski were able to assist all three safely back to shore.

No injuries were reported.

Ocean Safety officials report that Anini Beach is known for its strong currents. The water was especially rough today with waves of up to 20 feet outside of the reef.
