U.S. Senate candidates make final push before Election Day

Republican Linda Lingle spent her time shaking hands while Democrat Mazie Hirono was with her supporters phone banking — each trying to sway the undecided.

The clock is ticking to Election Day and the candidates for U.S. Senate aren’t wasting any minute of it.

Congresswoman Mazie Hirono and former Governor Linda Lingle have faced off against each other before and both know what is at stake.

This race is being closely watched here in Hawaii and on the national stage as candidates across the country battle for control of the Senate.

"We feel the momentum is on our side now, we’ve worked so hard. And I think people have a real clear choice in the election whether to send me and my proven background here in the state getting things done and my opponent who really is someone who will follow others," Lingle said.

"I think the voters of Hawaii knows who stands with them in the US senate race and they are very aware that a Republican controlled Senate would not be a positive thing for our families for job creation, for our kupuna, for our keiki," Hirono said.

Hirono’s campaign says polls have her with a bigger lead, while Lingle’s campaign has said the race is tightening.

"It’s the priorities and the values and the fact that I’ve been a really strong voice to keep medicare and social security that is not the way the Republicans are going and truly making sure we create jobs and supporting middle class families," Hirono said.

"You really have to be able to listen. I think that’s what is wrong in Washington and with politicians generally, they want to talk a lot, but they don’t listen well enough. And I think listening is very important," Lingle said.

Hirono headed over to Hilo Monday night for a vote rally with the Democratic party while Lingle is on a trolley ride with supporters around Honolulu.
