The department receives money from private donors to the UH foundation for business expenses.
Earlier this year, KHON2 received the spending reports from former athletic director Jim Donovan.
One of his expenses, a 17,000 dollar trip for athletics officials to the final four basketball tournament is called questionable in the audit.
The audit also says Donovan traveled about 30 percent of each year from 2010 through 2012 fiscal years.
Other points noted in the audit…an estimated 8600 free season tickets given to corporate partners and athletics employees.
The audit puts their value at $1.3 million dollars.
"My initial observations and looking at this we got to find a way that one office is seeing everything or that somebody is seeing everything so that we have different parts all doing their right thing by their policies," says Carl Clapp, UH Associate Athletic director.
The audit also pointed out that excess travel expenses are not returned in a timely manner.
And in one instance, $4,700 dollars in travel money was stolen from a safe in a coaches office.
