Unexploded ordnance destroyed on Kauai

An unexploded ordnance was destroyed Sunday in a remote area of Kapaa by the Army’s 706th explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team.

The EOD was alerted of the cylindrical object Saturday morning by the Kaua’i Police Department. KPD had been called to a home on Iwaena Loop in Kapaa at 7:33 am, when the parents of a 15-year-old living in the residence discovered the cylindrical object on their front porch. The minor had found the ordnance on the beach in Kapaa near mile marker 9 off of Kuhio Highway at approximately 10:30 pm on Friday, March 20, and brought it to their Hundley Heights home.

Officers closed portions of Iwaena Loop by 8:00 am in order to secure the scene. The house where the ordnance was reported and adjacent houses were evacuated until the ordnance could be removed. Attempts to disable the device on Saturday evening were unsuccessful.

Sunday morning, additional equipment was flown to Kaua’i and the ordnance was successfully destroyed at approximately 10:58 am.

The ordnance, which was about 2 ½ feet long and 6 inches in diameter, was identified by the Army as a World War II era, French-made marine sea marker containing minor explosives.

Captain Michael Contrades of the Kaua’i Police Department advises anyone finding such an object to not disturb it and alert police as soon as possible. "Safety is our main concern," stated Contrades. "These objects can be dangerous and should be handled only by experts with knowledge of how to dispose of them."
