It’s a suitcase that will save lives.
A Hawaii doctor is preparing to put his new piece of equipment to the test on people who may never receive health care.
It’s a rather simple concept. A solar suitcase.
Dr. Brad Wong with Aloha Medical Mission said, "well this suitcase provides as you see bright light in a situation where a person is being operated on, and in countries where the power supply is erratic."
And Doctor Wong should know he’s been to Nepal the past few years working weeks long medical missions.
"It’s really a win-win. It’s a win It’s a win for us because doing this kind of thing makes you feel good, and it let’s us grow. And it’s clearly a win on the people we operate on who are so poor they would never get an operation, never would they have the opportunity," said Dr. Wong.
And in places like Nepal power can’t always be counted on. And that’s where the lights from this suitcase come in handy, but that’s not all.
"It comes with two of these sport camping headlights so that the nurses can work independently to find things while the doctors and nurses are on the patient, using the main lights," Dr. Wong said.
Headlights and a fetal monitor can be charged with the energy stored from photovoltaic panels.
Doctor Wong says he came across the invention on the internet.
"It was developed three or four years ago, a gynecologist going to Africa, called her husband up and said, "hubby I’m operating here, the lights go out here and people die," said Dr. Wong.
Now Dr. Wong and his counterparts get ready for a mission to Nepal, operating on dozens of folks in need.
And when that mission is complete. The newly purchased device, paid for by Revolusun, will be given to a facility in need.
