The crash happened around 7:30pm Sunday night in the east-bound direction on the H-1 freeway between the Makakilo and north-south road.
According to police the driver of a truck tried to overtake a car using the left shoulder lane, which consisted of loose dirt and grass.
The truck went out of control, crossed three lanes of traffic then slammed into a mustang that was in the far right lane.
The truck then veered left crossing 3 lanes again and hit the median.
The 68 year old man driving the truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 34 year old man was the driver of the mustang car that was hit. He and his 24 year old female passenger were taken to the hospital in guarded condition.
HPD says speed may have been a factor.
