Utah based security company prompts complaints by Hawaii consumers

A few months ago, Hilo resident, Dora Okazaki answered the door to some college students selling Vivint’s home security and monitoring system.

"They told me it was just temporary," says Dora Okazaki, Hilo resident.

She paid a couple hundred dollars up front to have the security system installed.

"My understanding was if there was to install it it was to entice the neighbors to it also purchase I guess the security system," says Okazaki.

A few months later, Okazaki says she received a bill.

"When I called to say I was being billed you know heavily they said I can’t get off it because I had already signed the contract," says Okazaki.

Okazaki said she agreed to have the system in her home for a few months, but instead she signed a contract for two years.

"Then I went on to read the contract very carefully and of course in fine print it says that I had three days to cancel it," says Okazaki.

Okazaki is not alone, in recent weeks, the Hawaii BBB has received numerous complaints from consumers about Vivint.

Vivint is not BBB accredited and has a "D" rating.

"What’s important for consumers to be aware of regardless of whoever comes to your door whether it be this company or another company is to really make sure everything in the contract is something the consumer wants," says Timothy Caminos, Hawaii Better Business Bureau.

Okazaki is still trying to figure out what to do.

"I’m at fault too because I didn’t read all the fine print you really need to read the contract and if you see something that you’re really in doubt you need to highlight it yourself," says Okazaki.

Okazaki says Vivint told her she would have to pay two-thousand dollars to cancel the contract or sell her system to someone else.
