"They’re going to be around nine of of ten will be a man. It is definitely a male holiday. and that’s what creates the fun, because they are generally clueless. They need some help, and it can be quite entertaining," says Monty Pereira, Watanabe Floral.
"We were just talking about that at work. it seems like all the holidays are for the ladies," says Mana Kaapana, flower buyer.
Which sends guys in search of the perfect gift…
"This is what Watanabe get all kind of different varieties every year. so, it makes it even harder on me than anything else. so I don’t know if flowers, or the teddy bears, or the balloons," says Ernie Kaahanui, flower buyer.
And Ernie is a veteran, married about 19 years…what do you think it’s like for the rookies?
"First Valentine’s with her. A little pressure on the first Valentine’s? A little, yeah. I guess it kind of marks what it’s going to be like for future valentine’s," says Daniel Sanchez, flower buyer.
Valentines has flower shops seeing red, lots of it…
"Yes, it is by far the busiest day of the year. it is about ten to twelve times busier than a normal day," says Pereira.
That means more than 100 employees working on this special day…
Even special plans made for the store…
"Cause you won’t to have a nice through put, so people can get in and out in an efficient manner. not only to keep the congestion out of the store, but to get the traffic out. so, we don’t cause traffic on nimitz highway, which we have been known to do on valentine’s day," says Pereira.
Watanabe plans on making 600 deliveries on the big day.
That means 17 delivery trucks in action and 2500 arrangements all told being created for that special someone…
"I might do both, teddy bear and flowers, just to get brownie points," says Kaahanui.
