Vinyl records making a comeback

What was once deemed obsolete is making a comeback.

Vinyl records are picking up in sales, thanks to collectors and music purists.

For those who aren’t old enough to remember, this is how most people listened to music back in the 60′s and 70′s. It virtually disappeared when cassette tapes and cd’s came.

And with the popularity of digital downloads, even cd’s are fading out. but vinyl sales are picking up speed.

Some days someone will buy easily a couple of hundred dollars worth of vinyl or more," says Dennie Chong, Hungry Ear records.

Dennie Chong, owner of hungry ear records says nearly half of his sales now are vinyl records. Nationally, sales last year was the highest in decades and this year should be even higher.

I think people have come back and realized that it was always the best sound if you have a good system, it’s far superior and natural sound over CD or digital," says Chong.

Another reason is a sense of nostalgia. there are those like Chong who never gave up on records. There are also collectors who pay hundreds, even thousands of dollars for rare recordings in good shape. But even those who never grew up with it listen to vinyl with a modern touch.

There are also these USB turntables where you can plug in to your computer and digitize vinyl," says Chong.

It has picked up enough speed that even new groups are releasing albums in vinyl in limited quantities, usually sold at $15 to $25 dollars. Usually the record comes with a coupon that allows you to also download the album. Chong says in a couple of months a local artist will release a new album in vinyl.
