Volunteers train for homeless project

Dozens of volunteers joined a campaign called 100,000 Homes.

It’s a nationwide effort to save lives and public dollars by moving the most vulnerable and chronically homeless people into homes. This group of volunteers will start by going to beach parks across the island.

They plan to create a by-name and photo registry identifying the most at-risk and vulnerable.

"We’re not giving anything," said Darryl Vincent, Partners in Care chair. "People are being put into a home. They’re going to be wrapped around with services. They are going to be given choices which will either produce results or maybe they will have to work on some other issues. But its not a hand out, it’s a helping hand."

The initial goal is to get a hundred homeless people on Oahu into housing by next September. They say it’s a program that has also been done on the Big Island and has worked.

All the funds are being raised by non-profit and faith based groups.
