On Oahu there was a paddle out to bid aloha to another surfing legend.
James "Jimmy" Blears Jr., a longtime North Shore lifeguard and former world champion surfer, was remembered Sunday at San Souci Beach in Waikiki.
Blears was one of the first surfers from Hawaii to win the world championship.
He captured the title in 1972.
Blears went on to spend 20 years as a lifeguard at Sunset Beach.
He died last month at the age of 62.
