Zimmerman to make first court appearance

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — Lawyers for George Zimmerman are expected to ask for bail this afternoon when the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer appears in court.

Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman reached the jail in Sanford on Wednesday night, hours after a special prosecutor announced the charge against him. Television cameras showed black SUVs pulling into a loading area, but the suspect himself wasn’t visible.

Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara says that his client will plead not guilty and asks that people not jump to conclusions about whether he’s guilty.

Zimmerman has acknowledged shooting Martin but says it was in self-defense after the two got into a fight on Feb. 26th.
