WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is declaring an end to the Iraq war — saying all U.S. troops will be withdrawn by year’s end.
He spoke at the White House after a private video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
Obama said that after nearly nine years, "America’s war in Iraq will be over."
A White House official says the two leaders agreed strongly that it was the best way forward. Some U.S. officials had argued for a troop presence beyond the end of the year to cement security gains.
